More than a dozen major U.S. news organizations on Thursday said they were suing Cohere, an enterprise AI company, claiming the tech startup illegally repurposed their work and did so in a way that tarnished their brands.

The suit filed by a coalition of news publishers from the U.S., the U.K. and Canada say Cohere’s AI products regurgitate near-verbatim stories in real time and invent false stories that are wrongly attributed to the newsrooms.

Cohere accused of widespread copyright infringement for using scraped articles to train AI models without permission or compensation.
