Juneteenth originally started in Galveston, Texas to commemorate June 19, 1865, the date that enslaved people in that state were informed of their freedom.

A festival celebrating the end of slavery in the United States will kick off its seventh year in Humboldt County this week. Organizers are preparing for three days of Juneteenth celebrations —

The sounds of soul, R&B, jazz and reggae could be heard Saturday afternoon around the SteelStacks complex, as people gathered to enjoy a Juneteenth festival. Juneteenth Lehigh Valley, an organization honoring the holiday that memorializes the day Black enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were freed in 1865, put on the festival celebrating freedom.

Juneteenth is often described as the day “slavery ended in Texas,” but the truth behind it tells a deeper, more sobering story - one that includes deception, delay, and a hard-won arrival of justice.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday is officially observed on June 19, marking the day Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.
