The lead investigator in the Karen Read case has been fired after admitting that he sent sexist and crude texts about her to family and colleagues during her trial.

Hours after Read's trial ended, Proctor was relieved of duty, PEOPLE previously reported. Days later, he was suspended without pay, according to CBS. On Wednesday, the Massachusetts State Police announced Proctor's firing in a "dishonorable discharge," the Boston Herald reported.

During the trial, Read’s lawyers accused Proctor of manipulating evidence and conducting a biased investigation. They based the allegation in part on text messages he sent to friends, relatives and supervisors that showed him using offensive and vulgar language to describe Read.
