CINCINNATI — Bengals legendary tight end Bob Trumpy has passed away. He was 80 years old. Trumpy was a legend both on and off-the-field in Cincinnati. The Bengals picked him in the 12th round (301st overall) in the 1968 NFL Draft. He played for Cincinnati for 10 seasons.
Trumpy earned All-AFL honors in his sophomore year, recording 835 yards and nine touchdowns on only 37 receptions. The 1970 AFL-NFL merger didn’t stop Trumpy from averaging 36 catches, 487 yards, and three touchdowns over his next five seasons.
Former Oakland Raiders safety and Savannah native George Atkinson has died. Atkinson, a Johnson High School alumnus, was 78. A cause of death was not reported. The Savannah native attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta from 1964 to 1967.
