Candidates from different wings of the Democratic Party won key races on Election Day 2025 in the biggest test since President Trump's victory last year.

Cornyn led Crockett by 6 percentage points (50 percent to 44 percent), while Attorney General Ken Paxton held a 2-point lead against her (49 percent to 47 percent). Representative Wesley Hunt led Crockett by 5 points (50 percent to 45 percent).

The Senate failed for the 14th time to advance House-passed legislation to reopen the government on the day the shutdown tied the longest in history. The 54-44 vote fell short of 60 votes needed under Senate rules to advance the bill that would have provided short-term funding through Nov. 21.

Senate districts on the ballot in North Mississippi were 1, 2, 11 and 19. The special elections were the result of court-ordered legislative redistricting requiring the creation of a new majority-Black district in DeSoto County.

Polling places will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across the impacted districts. The special Senate election is the result of a federal court ruling that found Mississippi’s previous Senate map diluted Black voting strength.

State Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D) defeated conservative talk show host John Reid in the Virginia lieutenant governor’s race on Tuesday, becoming the first Indian person to hold statewide office in the commonwealth and the first Muslim woman to win a statewide race in the U.S.
