The Chicago area may have escaped the brunt of a winter storm hammering parts of the country, but snowfall totals are still piling up around the region.

Dangerously cold temperatures returned to the Chicago weather forecast Monday, a day after a winter storm dumped snow totaling over six inches on much of the area.

Brace for another bout of snow, Chicago. A winter weather advisory was set to go in effect Friday for much of the morning into the afternoon as a burst of accumulating snow sweeps through the Chicago area.

A quiet, dry day is in store for the Chicago area Thursday, but things will start to change overnight as lake effect snow begins to build in western Michigan, leading to a “prolonged” period of snow for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Friday and Saturday.

Several inches of snow hit the Chicago area Sunday, causing hundreds of flight delays and cancellations and more closures at school districts across the area for Monday.

Heavy lake effect snow continues to fall across portions of Chicagoland this afternoon. The heaviest bands will shift from northeast Illinois to northwest Indiana this evening.
