Vikings, Cowboys and McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings' future with quarterback JJ McCarthy could take a new turn after recent insider speculation.
Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy could see more competition next season, with a reunion with Daniel Jones already surfacing in NFL circles.
The Vikings faced a third-and-9 near midfield on the 10th play of their 98-yard drive against the Commanders last Sunday. They lined up with three receivers to quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s left, as Justin Jefferson ran a short motion from the slot toward left tackle Christian Darrisaw before breaking back out.
The Minnesota Vikings continue to have a unique situation at the quarterback position in 2025. While J.J. McCarthy is coming off his best game of the season, he is still very much on unstable ground as the season progresses. Because of that, some folks are wondering whether the team might make a move this offseason to bring in some competition.
If you're just looking at certain team defensive metrics, the Vikings' game against the Cowboys this week doesn't look much different than their most recent contest against the Commanders in terms of the challenge it will present J.J. McCarthy.
McCarthy is seeking consistency under the prime-time lights at “Jerry World,” or AT&T Stadium, where the Vikings will travel to play the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Finding completions will remain his focus after throwing a career-high 69.6% completion rate against Washington.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell fought that narrative a little on Wednesday, saying, “If it was that simple, I would probably get a lot more rest.”
The Cowboys are set for a prime-time home matchup Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings with Dallas still clinching to playoff hopes.

The 31-0 win over the Commanders will only do so much for the curriculum vitae of the 5-8 Vikings, but it provided a dose of relief for the team and its weary fanbase.
