Even beyond those who had to flee, an entire region has been under siege, and it feels like that’s our new reality.

At least four blazes are spreading in Southern California, near the scenic coast, in Malibu and the Pacific Palisades, as well as further inland. Firefighters are struggling to work in the wind, and the fires are uncontained.

Fire officials from both states say no engines were prevented from entering California and none of the vehicles underwent any emissions testing.
