Italy summoned Venezuela's chief diplomat in Rome on Wednesday to protest over a lack of information on the fate of an Italian national arrested in the Latin American country two months ago, the foreign ministry said.

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday condemned the "unacceptable act of repression" in Venezuela, hours after the brief arrest of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

Italy has protested Venezuela's lack of information over the arrest of Italian NGO worker Alberto Trentini in Caracas. Despite being detained for over two months, no charges have been filed. Tensions rise as Italy criticizes Venezuela's political climate and previously managed to secure a journalist's release from Iran.

An Italian aid worker detained in Venezuela since November has had no contact with officials or family for two months, prompting his family to appeal to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for intervention.

The family of Alberto Trentini, an Italian NGO worker who was arrested by Venezuelan authorities on November 15, on Tuesday urged the "Italian Government to put in place all possible and necessary diplomatic efforts" for his release.
