Newark Detective Joseph Azcona, 26, has been posthumously promoted to sergeant, officials announced Friday during his funeral.

Family, friends and supporters gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark to pay respects to Newark Detective Joseph Azcona.

A 14-year-old shot and killed a police officer and wounded another Friday evening in New Jersey, authorities said, in a chaotic scene that witnesses described as seeing officers running down a busy street before they heard a volley of a dozen or more gunshots.

Joseph Azcona, 26, was still in his police car when he was shot on Friday night, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

The Warren Police Department is expected to release bodycam footage Thursday during an update after a man was shot and killed by officers​ earlier this week.
