The Houston Texans are considering the possibility of moving on from their current home and building a new stadium, according to a report. The Houston Chronicle published a report Wednesday citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation that said the team is examining options for a new stadium — a scenario which could open doors for attracting major events and place a new burden on taxpayers.

The Texans are negotiating a new lease at NRG Stadium, which is owned by the county. But the football team may seek the public’s help in building a new facility

The Houston Texans new team president, Mike Tomon, who was hired last month, has a lot of experience in stadium development.

NRG Stadium, the Texans’ home since their inception, was completed in 2002 and cost $352 million. The stadium and surrounding NRG Park need $2 billion worth of repairs, according to a facility condition assessment released in December.
