Republicans are considering a far-reaching change to the budget process that would obscure the deficit impact of extending President Donald Trump’s multitrillion-dollar tax cuts in order to avoid paying for them.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) underscored the need to extend President Donald Trump‘s tax cuts in Congress’s budget bill, warning that the biggest tax increase “in U.S. history” would occur at the end of the year if the House’s resolution fails.

In a significant move, the House of Representatives has passed a Republican budget resolution that proposes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in spending reductions over the next decade.

Adoption of the Republican budget was the easy part. Now comes the difficult task of writing a bill consistent with what President Trump has demanded.
