The Holy See remains Taiwan’s only European ally, even as the Catholic Church deepens historic diplomatic and religious engagement with Beijing in recent years.

According to reports, Chinese officials are not permitted to express themselves publicly on Pope Francis’ death due the Chinese Communist Party’s control over the Church there.

China's foreign ministry on Tuesday expressed condolences over the death of Pope Francis, but said it had no information to share on who might attend the funeral.
